The scientists, from the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) of Sri Lanka, Colombo, studied 23 traditional rice varieties and found that bran — the outer covering of brown rice grains — contains chemicals that inhibit the enzyme responsible for the breakdown of complex sugars into glucose, and thus reducing the amount of sugar available to the body.

The Pilot Facility for Efficient Coir Processing and Quality Control is an outcome of a joint proposal submitted to the Common Fund for Commodities by the Coir Council International and the Coconut Development Authority in 2003. The project focused on establishment of a small capacity test/ demonstration coir mill aimed at improving small scale processing of coconut husks, including quality control practices, on a pilot basis implemented in Sri Lanka. It is an output- focused, simple, manageable and relatively low cost project.

A new fiber optics network was commissioned at ITI, facilitating next generation technology applications at the Institute. Together with this enhancement a new SLT E-1 Link was also installed to provide efficient voice communications links both to the outside world and within the institute . These measures will provide greater accessibility to the public at large, to ITI and its services .
The new system will be fully operational from December 2009 .

An awareness programme on Ginger based products,

Venue : ITI Main Auditorium
Target audience: Ginger growers, Exporters and Importers, Food Industry Personnel, Officers from Government and other Research Institutions etc.
Objectives :
- To introduce the quality characterises of locally grown ginger varieties
- To introduce value added products developed from ginger
- To introduce machinery developed for ginger processing
Topics covered: Lectures and demonstrations on ginger based product development and relevant machinery
