A group of Scientists from national institutes of four West African countries (Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia & Gambia) were trained on meeting the ISO 17025 requirements in microbiological analysis of food & water by the Quality Assurance Department (QAD) and the Chemical and Microbiological Laboratory (CML) of Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) recently.

The two week training programme included lectures on standard requirements, internal auditing, estimation of measurement uncertainty, traceability, internal quality control, external quality assurance (QAD) and calibration (Metrology laboratory, ITI) as well as practical sessions on analysis of food & water for microbiological quality (CML). The feedback received from trainees was highly satisfactory recommending ITI as an outstanding regional training centre which delivers comprehensive, high quality training programmes through highly qualified & dedicated resource personnel.

ITI, which operates under the Ministry of Technology & Research, Sri Lanka has a broad range of scientific and technical capabilities developed to meet the requirements of government and the private sector through a range of services. It presently encompasses several internationally accredited (SWEDAC) testing & calibration laboratories including chemical, microbiological & materials testing laboratories & the industrial metrology lab. In addition, the chemical, microbiological & materials laboratories have also been accredited by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB).

ITI has established recognition as a credible regional training centre for laboratory quality management and microbiological analysis & several training sessions were conducted to trainees from Ghana, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Pakistan, Laos & Cambodia during the past few years.

This training was requested by United Nations Industrial Development Organization, (UNIDO) who provided financial assistance to the programme. The chemical, microbiological, materials testing and industrial metrology laboratories of ITI were developed with support from a UNIDO/NORAD intervention through the UNIDO integrated industrial development support program for Sri Lanka few years back & today UNIDO is recommending ITI as one of the best destinations for training & development of scientists on implementation of ISO 17025 QMS for testing/calibration laboratories.
