Risk Assessment for Possible Chlorine Leakage

The risk assessment was carried out using several tools; ALOHA and SLAB models developed by USEPA, and ERG 2008 (Emergency Response Guide Book 2008). The simulated release concentrations considered worst-case and alternative situations such as the release quantity, the physical state, the diameter and height of broken holes/ valves, effectiveness of mitigation systems such as enclosure, scrubber and water spray systems.

Preliminary Assessment of Risk Associated with Proposed Super Absorbent Manufacturing Process

Risk assessment was done for establishing new project for refining and surface treatment of Carboxy Methyl Starch (CMS). The client requested to evaluate risk associated with transport, storage, handling and processing of these chemicals prior to decision making of this investment. The report has been submitted evaluating the level of risk associated in each process activities including contingency management plan.

AIR DISPERSION MODELING

Environmental Technology Section of ITI is equipped with US EPA recommended latest versions for Air Dispersion Modeling (ADM) tools, which can be utilized to predict ambient air quality. Being the pioneer in applying advanced air dispersion methodology in Sri Lanka, every ADM study is done by a team of Engineers certified by internationally recognized hands-on training conducted by Lakes Environmental Software, USA. More than seven (7) years of working experience in this field enable us to analyze more challenging air dispersion modeling scenarios.

Performance Highlights

ADM Can Be Effectively Applied In

              • Industry Permitting/Siting
              • Design of Stacks
              • Design of Air Pollution Control Systems
              • “Culpability” Analysis
              • Prediction of Air Quality (For the existing condition, By varying existing conditions and To find adequacy of mitigation/control technology)
              • Selection of Air Quality Monitoring Locations
              • Evaluation of the Impact of New Pollution Sources (Industry expansion and/or modification and Proposed projects, EIA, IEE)

Modeling Tools Available @ ITI

Model Output Can Be Represent As

      • Time averaged iso-concentration plots (Ex:1-hr SOX, 8-hr SOX, 24-hr PM10)
      • Effect of a single source or multiple sources (2D and 3D)
      • As an overlay on site map, plant layout
      • Maximum average pollutant concentration and location
      • Maximum 50 or 100 pollutant concentrations with respective locations

Pilot Study Using Reverse Osmosis Plant to produce Soft Sterile Water for Pharmaceutical Industry

A Pharmaceutical manufacturing industry utilized treated municipal water for the production process. The water treatment process undergoes softening and sterilizing by boiling to comply with the BP standards. The softening process utilized was not adequate to maintain required water quality and sterilization method was not cost effective. Hence, the client requested our assistance to improve the process water quality with special consideration on its conductivity.

RO PilotBy considering available information, source water quality, required water quality and present issues Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology was recommended to achieve required process water quality. Since the source is surface water supplied through municipal line, the concentrate stream generate from the reverse osmosis process could also be recycled for other operations. As significant investment is needed for full scale plant, the client agreed to carry out pilot study using pilot-scale RO plant available at Environmental Technology Section of ITI to ensure that the recommended technology is acceptable to obtain intended water quality.

This study was continued for two months providing water for the production process. The results revealed that the required water quality could be obtained consistently and concentrated stream could also be recycled for other cleaning activities.

Pilot study for Palm Oil Mill Effluent

Anaerobic digestion followed by aerobic digestion is the best available treatment technology for this type of effluent due to presence of high organic content in the forms of both soluble and insoluble (colloidal) form. Aerobic treatment is a straight forward design for any kind of biodegradable effluent. However it is not economical in case of highly concentrated effluent even with dilution to bring down the organic strength. Therefore, anaerobic digestion is the most economical treatment technology for biodegradable effluent with high organic strength prior to the aerobic treatment. Since number biochemical reactions involved in the anaerobic digestion process (Hydrolysis, Acidogenesis, Acetogenesis and Methanogenesis), effectiveness of the treatment process is very specific to the type of effluent to be treated. Use of typical design parameters is not economical particularly in large scale design. Since various interferences could be possible for microbial activity, operation of prototype/pilot plant/demonstration plant is required to ensure effectiveness of the anaerobic digestion technology for treatment of palm oil effluent.

Therefore following demonstration plant was proposed to determine effectiveness of anaerobic treatment technology.
