1.Conductive graphite from local graphite

Highly conducting graphite was prepared from local graphite as a value addition to local graphite. Sri Lankan vein graphite found to be more conducting than the commercial conductive graphite.

The technology transfer: to graphite industry in 2023.

 2. Graphite oxide production from vein graphite as a value addition

Background. Graphene and graphene oxides are highly valuable materials (>1000 times graphite) which can be produced from Sri Lankan vein graphite as a value addition to graphite. A novel composition was invented to prepare highly oxidized Graphene oxide (GO) on mass scale.

dr Iresha 2

Technology Transfer: The methodology was transferred to the Industry in 2020

Patents: ITI holds 02 Sri Lankan Patents

3.Graphene production from vein graphite as a value addition

Background. Graphene is known as a wonder material which is attracted in multidisciplinary application. It is possible to prepare graphene from local graphite and the value addition is more than 1000 times to graphite. A novel method and apparatus were invented to produce Graphene on mass scale form high quality Sri Lankan vein graphite for the first time in Sri Lanka.

Project output/outcomes

  • An efficient low cost method was developed to prepare few-layer graphene from local graphite as a value addition.
  • An apparatus was constructed to prepare graphene and reduced graphene oxide on mass scale in few minutes.

Technologies Transfer: The methodology was transferred to the industry in 2020. The technology of novel apparatus to produce graphene was transferred in 2023.

Patents: ITI holds 02 Sri Lankan Patents

Awards: A Gold medal for Sahasak nimayum awards 2022 was received for the innovative method and apparatus to prepare graphene on mass scale.

4. Purification of graphite above 99.9% (chemical method)

Background. Graphite is being exported without much value addition at low price. Highly pure graphite is several times more expensive than raw graphite. A project was initiated to purify graphite above 99.9% as a high value addition to vein graphite sources in Sri Lanka in a cost efficient and effective manner.

 dr Iresha 4

Technologies Transferred: to the industry in 2022. Commercialization began by the industry

Awards: A silver medal from Sahasak nimayum awards 2022 was received for this innovation.

Patens: ITI holds 1 Sri Lankan patents.

5. Purification of graphite (non-chemical)

Graphite is being exported without much value addition at low price. Purified graphite is several times more expensive than raw graphite. A novel apparatus was constructed to purify low grade graphite up to 99%.

dr Iresha 5

Technology Transfer: A novel non-chemical method was developed and a purification plant was constructed to upgrade low grade graphite up to 99% carbon and knowhow was transferred to industry in 2022

Awards: Dasis award and a Gold medal for Sahasak nimayum awards 2022 was received from Sri Lanka inventors commission for this innovation.

Patents: filed 02 Sri Lankan patents.

 6. Red clay based water filter for removal of Fluoride and Heavy metals and other contaminants from drinking water.

Background. Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) has been reported to occur in several areas of Sri Lanka, mostly in the North Central and North Western provinces. Water contamination is the suspected cause for the disease. Imported filters and local filters are being distributed by various organizations. We have developed a low cost, durable, quality guaranteed water filter for removal of most of the suspected ions for CKDu including fluoride, arsenic and cadmium, from water. The composition was further improved to reduce the hardness and microorganism removal ability as well.

dr Iresha 6

Technologies Transferred/Commercialized:

  • Technology of fabricating clay water filter for removal of fluoride, arsenic and cadmium was transferred to Red Cross International Organization in 2016
  • A pilot water filter system for removal of fluoride ions and water hardness was transferred to an ice cream factory in 2015.
  • ITI is supplying water filters produced by Red Cross on request.

Patent: ITI holds 05 Sri Lanka patents

Awards:

  • In 2023, a Gold medal for Sahasak nimayum awards 2021 by Sri Lanka Inventors commission
  • In 2023, the Presidential awards-2017 patent – a merit award by Sri Lanka inventors commission for Red clay filter for removal of fluoride and heavy metals
In 2018, the Presidential awards-2016-patent-3rd place for “Red clay filter for removal of fluoride”.
