Contract projects are undertaken at the request of Government, Private and Foreign organizations to support local industries and for export products. These projects fall into categories of food, herbal, materials, acoustic emissions, design and fabrication of equipment. Environment monitoring related contract projects includes effluent treatment systems, waste disposal, waste water management etc. Pilot scale studies on postharvest management of fruits and vegetables, setting up of manufacturing processes and surveys of air and water quality are also offered.
Metro Colombo Solid waste management project of the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Province Development
After the Meethotamulla waste site disaster , ITI carried out testing of the quality of surface and ground water for the solid waste management project at Aruwakkalu, Puttalam prior to moving from Meethotamulla. Samples were tested for heavy metals, microbials and for chemical and physical parameters.
Karadiyana and Muthurajawela are two other dump sites that have been identified as locations for open solid waste dumping where ITI successfully carried out the initial testing for leachate. Similar tests were also carried out for sites at Meethotamulla and Kelaniya.
Air Quality Testing at Norchcholai Coal Power Plant
Due to concerns about the discharge of ash, which is air borne and leading to environmental and health problems ITI with its state-of-the-art Ambient Air Quality Monitoring facility, monitored all parameters according to recommended methods stated in the National Environmental (Ambient Air Quality) regulations, monitored the air quality and stack emissions for SOx, NOx, particles, solvents and other dusts and gases. This was the first such air monitoring that was done for the coal plant after its commissioning in 2011.
Similarly, ITI has also monitored the quality of air in several projects including the Port Access elevation highway project, Bandaranaike International Airport development project, Minipe left bank canal rehabilitation project etc. in addition to baseline surveys on air quality in industrial zones in North Western and Western Provinces.
