Genetically modified organism is an organism whose genetic material has been altered by means of genetic engineering. According to the Sri Lankan Law, the food that contain genetically modified (GM) substances has to be declared for importation and sale. According to the law, if a food product contains GMO or GM ingredient more than 0.5% it should be labeled as ‘genetically modified’. Similarly, for exportation of a food/supplement or plant-based products, confirmation whether the product is GM, is an essential requirement. Hence, the biotechnology Section of ITI has the technology to offer molecular level GMO detection by Real Time PCR method (Gold Standard Method) for spices, herbs, fresh, baked and processed food products.
Following parameters are available for GM testing at Biotechnology Section of ITI
Adulteration of food products occurs frequently in worldwide. Sri Lanka also could be a victim of such adulterations from imported as well as locally produced food products. DNA based tests are the best for authentication of species in raw and processed food products. The Biotechnology Section of ITI has developed novel methods based on PCR for identification of origin and animal ID. We offer PCR based methods for fast and accurate detection of adulterants in food, meat, dairy and pharmaceutical products.
